Yad Chessed

Nancy J. Kriegel is the executive director of Yad Chessed, a Jewish social service organization. Prior to her commitment to Jewish communal service, she was an attorney and co-founder of Gateways for Access to Jewish Education. She earned a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania and Boston College Law School and lives in Sharon, Massachusetts. In her role, Kriegel oversees the organization’s operations, which include programs for homeless and low-income clients.

In the early 1990s, a group of dedicated volunteers began helping the needy in their community. The nonprofit organization, which has no government funding, relies on private donors and the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston to continue its mission. Approximately 4,000 Jewish households in Greater Boston live in poverty, and another 11,000 are on the brink of destitution. Last year, Yad Chessed collected more than $200,000 and distributed 1,325 food gift cards worth $150 each. The vouchers are valid on Purim Day and at grocery stores afterward.

With the help of the charity fund, Housman began delivering his message about the needs of the Jewish community in Greater Boston. He began by writing letters to religious schools and synagogues, and soon enough, donations started pouring in. His success prompted him to hire an executive director to run the charity. But when the business grew, he realized he could not run the charity alone anymore and decided to retire. The executive director at Yad Chessed today is Suzi Schuller.
